Bangor University dates from 1884, when it was established under the name University College of North Wales. In 1893 it was a founder member of the federal University of Wales, and its current name has been in use since 2007. Roughly 10,000 students are taught within its ten academic schools. Its principal campus is in Bangor, a small cathedral city on the coast of North Wales that sits between the Menai Strait and the Eryri (Snowdonia) mountains. On Anglesey, marine and ocean sciences are housed at the Menai Bridge site, where the university also runs the research vessel Prince Madog. Some health sciences teaching also happens in Wrexham.

Areas of recognised strength include ocean and environmental sciences, research into sustainability, and nuclear and materials work carried out by the Nuclear Futures Institute. Welsh culture and the Welsh language lie at the core of the university's identity. The School of Welsh is long established, and a wide selection of courses can be taken in the Welsh language. In 2023 Bangor was honoured with a Queen's Anniversary Prize for its contribution to a public health surveillance system.

Information for International Students

Bangor University International College is embedded on the main campus. Oxford International teaches its courses, while the university oversees quality. It offers a foundation-level International Year Zero, the International Year One and the International Incorporated Masters, with successful students progressing to Bangor degrees. ELCOS, the English Language Centre for Overseas Students, runs pre-sessional courses alongside English classes offered throughout the year. For most undergraduate programmes the requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall, with every component at 5.5 or higher; nursing, law and teacher education are among the subjects asking for more.

Undergraduates who choose Bangor as their firm option are guaranteed a place in university halls, provided they submit a housing application by the published deadline, and postgraduates meeting the relevant conditions have a guarantee of their own. Based in the Main Arts building, the International Student Support team offers visa and immigration advice, individual appointments and workshops. It also organises a welcome and orientation programme and, on set dates, collects arriving students from Manchester Airport. International scholarships are available in several tiers for undergraduate and postgraduate study, and the UK Graduate Route is open to eligible graduates.
