Brunel University of London
Brunel University of London received its Royal Charter in 1966, developing from Brunel College of Advanced Technology, which was named after the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and had its roots in Acton Technical College. In 2024 Brunel became a member institution of the University of London and adopted its current name.
The university occupies a single, self-contained campus in Uxbridge, west London, where teaching buildings, halls of residence and sports facilities are all within a short walk of each other, and central London is reachable by public transport. It has more than 12,000 students. Academic activity is organised into Brunel Business School and three colleges: Arts, Law and Social Sciences; Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences; and Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. Traditionally strong in engineering, design and technology, Brunel broadened through mergers with other institutions into the humanities, social sciences, sport and health, and its portfolio now includes medicine. The university is known for its emphasis on professional practice and links with industry, and it is regarded as one of the most internationally diverse universities in the UK. It also holds Athena SWAN accreditation for its work supporting gender equality.
Information for International Students
Brunel has a highly international community, with students from around 110 countries, and it features among the most international universities in the UK in Times Higher Education measures. Dedicated visa and immigration staff help applicants with Student visa and CAS matters, and country-specific guidance on entry requirements is published for many regions. English language requirements vary by course, typically ranging from IELTS 6.0 to IELTS 7.0 overall. The Brunel Language Centre runs pre-sessional English courses for students who do not yet meet the direct entry level, with entry to the longest routes possible from around IELTS 4.0.
Brunel University of London Pathway College, operated by Navitas, is located on the Uxbridge campus. It offers foundation, first-year and pre-master's programmes in subjects including business, engineering, law, computing and health sciences, allowing students to progress to Brunel degrees on meeting the required standard.
International students are guaranteed on-campus accommodation for the duration of their degree, subject to conditions, and the halls are within a few minutes of teaching and sports facilities. Scholarships for international students are available, and graduates may be eligible for the Graduate Route.
