Edge Hill University
Edge Hill University traces its origins to Edge Hill College, founded in 1885 as England's first non-denominational college for training women as teachers. In 1931 the foundation stone was laid for its current campus at Ormskirk in Lancashire, and university status was granted in 2006. Teacher education continues to be one of its defining strengths, while its provision has since broadened to take in the arts, sciences, business, and health and social care.
The University is based on one landscaped campus of about 160 acres, located between Liverpool and Preston, which brings together the Wilson Centre sports facility, the Catalyst library, academic buildings and student housing. Enrolment exceeds 13,000, with postgraduates accounting for around one in four students. There are three faculties: Education; Health and Social Care, where nurses, midwives and paramedics are trained; and Arts and Sciences, whose remit covers business, psychology and media. Students gain hands-on experience of the music industry through The Label Recordings, the University's own record label, and Edge Hill is also home to the Edge Hill Short Story Prize.
Information for International Students
Enquiries and applications go to Edge Hill's International Office, and the International Student Support team helps throughout the course with general, academic, wellbeing and English language matters. Most undergraduate courses require IELTS 6.0 overall; those narrowly short can first take a University pre-sessional English course. Some science and technology subjects run over four years with an integrated foundation year.
Paying the tuition fee deposit triggers the CAS, and paying fees in full before it is issued earns a discount. Weekly pre-departure emails start several weeks before travel. For arrivals on the standard dates, staff meet students at the airport and bring them to campus free of charge, after which an orientation week offers a welcome event, campus tours, a Liverpool excursion and a session introducing UK student life. The Global Friends scheme connects newcomers with existing students, and halls on the Ormskirk campus are open to international students. Eligible full-time international fee payers are automatically considered for a University scholarship, and graduates may apply for the Graduate Route.
