Liverpool John Moores University

Liverpool

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a public university in the centre of Liverpool. It traces its history to the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts, founded in 1823, and after a series of mergers became Liverpool Polytechnic in 1970 before gaining university status in 1992. It is named after Sir John Moores, the businessman and philanthropist who supported its predecessor institutions.

LJMU is one of the larger universities in the UK, with around 25,000 students. Teaching is organised into two faculties based on separate city centre campuses: the Faculty of Society and Culture at Mount Pleasant, covering business, law, education, humanities and the arts, and the Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science at City Campus, covering engineering, sciences, nursing, pharmacy and sport. The university has a particularly strong reputation in sport and exercise science and hosts the Astrophysics Research Institute. It also has a long history of education, training and research for the maritime industry. Degree programmes place strong emphasis on practical, real-world experience and graduate employability, supported by close links with employers across the Liverpool City Region.

Information for International Students

LJMU has students from more than 100 countries studying alongside UK peers in Liverpool, a city with one of the largest student populations in the UK. The International Student Advice team, part of Student Advice and Wellbeing Services, provides guidance on study visas and general immigration matters for applicants, current students and recent graduates, and the university issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) required for a Student visa application.

English language requirements vary by programme, and applicants who need to improve their English can take pre-sessional English courses run by the International Study Centre.

The LJMU International Study Centre, operated by Study Group, offers an International Foundation Year and an Extended International Foundation Year, an International Year One leading to the second year of a degree, and a Pre-Masters Programme in business, management and law or engineering and computing. Some pathway students can apply for a single visa covering both the preparatory programme and the following degree, avoiding a second application. Accommodation is available on campus and in the city. Graduates may be eligible for the UK Graduate Route after completing their studies.
