London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA)

London

Established in 1861, the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art ranks as the oldest specialist drama school anywhere in the British Isles. Music was its original focus, but over time it moved towards spoken English and training for the stage, taking its current name in 1935. In 2019 it withdrew from the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama, and in 2021 secured probationary degree awarding powers. In 2026 the Office for Students granted it indefinite degree awarding powers, so LAMDA now designs and confers its own degrees.

Its Hammersmith home on Talgarth Road, West London, is a building by Niall McLaughlin Architects with three theatres plus rehearsal and production space. Training covers acting, directing, musical theatre, screen, and production and technical arts. Courses include the BA (Hons) Production and Technical Arts: Stage and Screen and the BA (Hons) Professional Acting, a CertHE-level Foundation in Stage and Screen lasting six months, and postgraduate courses such as the MA Classical Acting and the MFA Professional Acting. LAMDA operates one of the UK's biggest examination boards for speech and drama and is a member of the Federation of Drama Schools and Conservatoires UK.

Information for International Students

International and UK candidates share one application process, but audition arrangements vary with the course and the applicant's location, and an audition tour of North America has featured for some programmes. Neither the Foundation in Stage and Screen nor the BA Professional Acting requires formal academic qualifications, though fluency in English is essential. The English of non-native speakers is judged at audition; after an offer is made, they must provide a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test result at B2 or above on the CEFR scale; an IELTS for UKVI score is specified for postgraduate acting programmes. LAMDA holds a Student sponsor licence, allowing it to issue a CAS to international applicants who win a place.

There are no halls of residence, though staff help newcomers find London accommodation. Each student is assigned a personal tutor, with further support from a Student Advisor, a Disability Coordinator and a Student Wellbeing Manager. International students are encouraged to explore home-country funding early. LAMDA offers a small number of scholarships and bursaries and is part of the US Federal Direct Loan Program. The Graduate Route is open to graduates of eligible degree courses.
