Middlesex University

London

The history of Middlesex University begins in 1878 with the opening of St Katharine's College in Tottenham, which trained women to become teachers. Successive mergers led to the creation of Middlesex Polytechnic in 1973, and university status followed in 1992. After consolidating a number of north London sites, the university now teaches every one of its UK students on one campus at Hendon in north-west London, about 30 minutes from the centre of the capital. The neo-Georgian College Building there was built in 1939.

Around 15,000 students are based in London, while the broader Middlesex network, which also has campuses in Dubai and Mauritius, serves over 37,000. Three faculties organise its teaching: Science and Technology, Arts and Creative Industries, and Professional and Social Sciences. Employability shapes much of its provision, with many degrees offering an optional placement year and a selection of degree apprenticeships also available. Middlesex has won two Queen's Awards for Enterprise and three Queen's Anniversary Prizes, achieved a Silver rating in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework and has a worldwide community of more than 285,000 alumni.

Information for International Students

Students of over 120 nationalities are enrolled at Middlesex. Confidential advice on Student visas and immigration status comes from the International Student Advice team, and UniHelp is the first port of call for broader support. For most undergraduate courses the requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in every component; most postgraduate courses expect 6.5 overall and 6.0 in each component. Oxford ELLT, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are among the other tests accepted.

Applicants below the required level may take the university's own pre-sessional English course at Hendon, lasting between 6 and 30 weeks depending on starting level; passing it allows progression to a degree with no further English test. Undergraduates apply through UCAS and postgraduates direct to the university, and international offices in several regions offer free help to applicants. International applicants can complete any required interview, audition or portfolio online. Most courses begin in September, some with a January intake too. Halls of residence are situated opposite the Hendon campus or within walking distance of it. Scholarships and bursaries are offered, and the Graduate Route may be open to eligible graduates.
