Newcastle University
Newcastle University is a research-intensive public university and a founding member of the Russell Group. Its history begins in 1834 with the establishment of a school of medicine and surgery in the city, and the institution took its present form as an independent university in 1963. The main campus is set in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, within walking distance of the city centre, and the university also operates international campuses in Malaysia and Singapore.
Around 28,000 students from more than 130 countries study at Newcastle. Medicine and engineering are long-established strengths, and the academic portfolio now extends across business, the humanities, the creative arts and the social sciences. Research is concentrated on societal challenges, with particular focus on ageing and health, data science, cities and place, sustainability, and cultural and creative arts. The university holds a Silver rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2023 and is recognised internationally for combining academic study with practical, career-focused learning in a lively and affordable student city.
