NMITE (New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering)

Hereford

Based in Hereford, the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) is a specialist higher education provider set up to reimagine how engineers are trained. It was incorporated in 2013 and joined the Office for Students register in 2020. The first cohort began in September 2021 on Open University-validated degrees, and NMITE's own degree awarding powers took effect from September 2023.

Traditional lectures and examinations have no place in its approach to teaching. Instead, students collaborate in teams within studio settings, tackling practical challenges devised with employers, and contact hours across the working week are high; course design draws on input from more than 80 industry partners. Study is accelerated: a BEng or BSc takes two years and an integrated MEng three. The programmes span mechanical engineering, integrated engineering, construction management and autonomous robotics, with the Institution of Engineering and Technology accrediting the integrated engineering degrees. Students who require more preparation can take a foundation year. Teaching is delivered at two campuses in Hereford, Skylon and Blackfriars, and NMITE also provides short professional courses in areas such as timber technology.

Information for International Students

NMITE welcomes applicants from all over the world. As a small specialist provider, it offers closely tailored support. Non-native English speakers need to prove their proficiency, usually through IELTS. Depending on the English qualifications they already hold, the required score is either 6.0 overall with no component under 5.5 or 6.5 overall with no component under 6.0, or an accepted equivalent. The foundation year, open to those aged 18 or over and providing progression to the engineering and technology degrees, has the same English standard. Neither mathematics nor physics at A-level is required, since both are covered within the curriculum, and certain applicants are asked to attend a one-to-one interview.

Eign Gate, run by the accommodation partner StuDens, is a purpose-built residence in Hereford city centre offering en-suite rooms, roughly five minutes on foot from the Blackfriars campus. First-year students are guaranteed a room if they accept their offer and complete booking within the stated deadlines. Certain sponsored bursaries are open to international applicants, among them awards for women on engineering or construction management courses, and the Graduate Route is open to eligible graduates.
