Northeastern University London
Northeastern University London started out as the New College of the Humanities, which the philosopher A. C. Grayling set up in 2010 as an independent college centred on small-group teaching. Northeastern University, a private research institution founded in Boston in 1898, took it over in 2019. Taught degree-awarding powers came in 2020, and in 2022 the college became a university and adopted its current name. It belongs to Northeastern's international network of campuses across Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Since a move from its original premises in Bedford Square in 2021, the sole campus has been Devon House, St Katharine Docks, in central London. It has roughly 2,200 students, representing nearly 100 nationalities. Undergraduates can study economics, English, history, law, philosophy, psychology, business, computer science or data science, while master's options include data science, ethics and artificial intelligence, alongside degree apprenticeships. Teaching combines the tutorial approach carried over from the first college with Northeastern's own model of experiential learning, and students also have access to co-op placements and study opportunities across the wider network, among them semesters in the United States.
Information for International Students
Applicants who do not have English as a first language are generally expected to hold IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6.0 or above in every one of the four components; this applies equally to undergraduate and master's entry. The university lists no foundation year, no pathway programme and no pre-sessional English course, so international students join their degree programmes directly. Anyone whose results fall a little short of the typical offer may be asked to attend an interview, and students needing a visa pay a tuition deposit when securing their place.
The Visa Team handles Student visa queries and publishes step-by-step application guidance, and wider immigration information comes from the Office of Global Services. Accommodation is neither guaranteed nor booked by the university. Students instead decide between purpose-built residences operated by partner providers in east and central London, renting privately or commuting, and the Housing Team gives personal guidance on these options. For international students, online resources explain banking, transport, living costs, and healthcare and insurance, and the student support service can help with settling in. The UK Graduate Route is open to graduates who meet its eligibility conditions.
