Queen Mary University of London

London

Queen Mary University of London is a research-intensive public university and a member of the Russell Group. Its history dates back to 1785 and the founding of The London Hospital Medical College, England's first official medical school, and the modern university grew from the great charitable institutions of London's East End. Teaching takes place across five campuses in London, with the principal campuses at Mile End and Whitechapel in the East End, a self-contained setting with its own shops, sports facilities and residences close to the city.

More than 32,000 students from over 170 nationalities study at Queen Mary, and around 46 per cent come from overseas. Academic strengths span the humanities and social sciences, science and engineering, and medicine and dentistry. The university performed strongly in the Research Excellence Framework 2021 and holds a Silver rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2023. It is also known for one of the most diverse student communities in the UK and a strong commitment to widening access, with a high proportion of home undergraduates who are the first in their family to attend university.

Information for International Students

Queen Mary has one of the most internationally diverse student bodies in the UK, with students of more than 170 nationalities. The Advice and Counselling Service provides specialist immigration advice, guidance on Student visas and practical information on travelling to and arriving in the UK.

English language requirements are set by each school and vary by programme; many courses typically ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with higher levels for medicine and dentistry. Students slightly below the required level may take a Pre-sessional English course of 5, 9 or 13 weeks.

The university runs its own pathway programmes, taught on campus by Queen Mary academics: an International Foundation Year with routes in humanities and social sciences and in science and engineering, and a Pre-Masters Programme at Mile End. Integrated foundation years are also available within some four-year degrees. External routes include Kaplan International College London, NCUK study centres worldwide and OnCampus London at Birkbeck.

First-year undergraduate and foundation students who meet the published criteria are guaranteed accommodation, as are eligible pre-master's students. East London locations offer direct Underground links to central London, and eligible graduates may apply for the Graduate Route.
