The Royal Veterinary College, University of London was founded in 1791 and is the oldest and largest veterinary school in the UK. It became part of the University of London in 1949 and holds its own royal charter. Teaching takes place on two campuses: the Camden campus in central London, close to St Pancras, where early years of study are based, and the Hawkshead campus in rural Hertfordshire, opened in 1959, which houses the main clinical and hospital facilities.
The college is a small, specialist institution with around 2,500 students. Its programmes include the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine with standard and accelerated graduate entry routes, veterinary nursing and bioveterinary sciences, alongside master's courses in areas such as veterinary epidemiology, wild animal biology, wild animal health, veterinary education and One Health. Research focuses on improving animal and human health and welfare. The Queen Mother Hospital for Animals and the Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital give students clinical experience with a substantial caseload. The RVC holds a Silver rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2023, with Gold for student outcomes.
