Stranmillis University College
Stranmillis University College, a specialist provider of higher education in Belfast, forms part of Queen's University Belfast as one of its colleges, and its degrees are conferred by Queen's. It opened in 1922 with the purpose of delivering state-funded teacher training for Northern Ireland, entered into affiliation with Queen's in 1968 and achieved university college status in 1999. Preparing teachers is still central to its mission. The Bachelor of Education is offered in both primary and post-primary teaching, further degrees cover early childhood studies as well as physical education and sport, and foundation degrees are available in these same areas. Postgraduate provision extends to master's and doctoral study.
The college occupies a site on Stranmillis Road next to the River Lagan, within Belfast's student quarter. Its grounds hold conservation designation and contain woodland, lakes and historic buildings, and the main building was constructed in the late 1920s. With approximately 1,400 students, Stranmillis is a small institution, and its placements and practical experience depend on links with over 750 schools and other partners in education and the community.
Information for International Students
Exchange and study abroad form the basis of international study at Stranmillis. Visiting students can spend time at the college through arrangements under Erasmus+ and International Student Exchange, and students from universities in the United States, whether partners or not, are welcome for a semester. They usually take 60 CATS credits, choosing from subjects such as education, theology, early childhood studies, sport, liberal arts, and youth and community work. International applicants may also enrol on the college's online postgraduate programmes. Those from countries where English is not the main language are expected to demonstrate English at CEFR B2 level, which corresponds to IELTS 6.5 overall with every band at 5.5 or above.
The International Team provides support before arrival and throughout the stay, and immigration information, including advice on Student visa options, follows the UKCISA Code of Ethics. On-campus accommodation is guaranteed, with over 400 single bedrooms, all fully catered, and residential support and security around the clock. There is no airport collection service; instead, student volunteers act as buddies, contacting new arrivals in advance so they can reach the campus safely.
