The University of Manchester
The University of Manchester is a large public research university and a founding member of the Russell Group. Its origins date back to 1824, and the present institution was formed in 2004 through the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST, creating one of the largest single-site universities in the UK. It has more than 44,000 students.
The main campus runs along the Oxford Road corridor, close to Manchester city centre, and brings together academic buildings, libraries, the Whitworth art gallery and the Manchester Museum. Teaching and research are organised across three faculties: Biology, Medicine and Health; Science and Engineering; and Humanities, which includes the Alliance Manchester Business School. The university has a strong global reputation for research, with a long association with Nobel laureates and landmark discoveries, including the first isolation of graphene. It is particularly well regarded in engineering, materials science, physics, computer science, business and the life sciences, and it works closely with industry and the wider city region.
Information for International Students
The University of Manchester has one of the largest international student communities in the UK, with around 14,500 of its students coming from outside the EU. A dedicated Student Immigration Team advises on the Student visa and Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), and on related immigration matters during the degree. Eligible graduates may also apply for the UK Graduate Route.
The typical English language requirement for most undergraduate courses is IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6.5 in writing and no other component below 6.0, although requirements vary by programme. The University Centre for Academic English, based on campus, offers pre-sessional courses of 4, 6 and 10 weeks for offer holders who need to meet their language conditions, as well as a longer English for Academic Purposes programme.
For students who do not meet direct entry requirements, the university offers integrated foundation years in science and engineering subjects. First-year international students who come to Manchester alone, pay international fees and apply for accommodation by 31 August are guaranteed a place in university accommodation, with the guarantee continuing for later years if they reapply by the February deadline.
