Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance
Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance came into being in 2005, when Trinity College of Music, dating from 1872, merged with the Laban dance centre, itself descended from the Art of Movement Studio set up in Manchester in 1945. No UK higher education institution had previously brought music and dance together within one conservatoire, and musical theatre has since been added to its portfolio. City University validated its degrees until Trinity Laban obtained its own Taught Degree Awarding Powers in 2016, and it holds the Office for Students designation of world-leading specialist provider.
Its sites are spread across south-east London. Music is taught at King Charles Court within the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, and dance at the Laban Building, a Herzog & de Meuron design on Deptford Creekside, while musical theatre is based at Laurie Grove, New Cross. The majority of its roughly 1,300 students take undergraduate programmes, including the BMus, the BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance and the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre Performance, and others follow master's degrees, professional and artist diplomas or research degrees. It belongs to Conservatoires UK.
Information for International Students
Visa matters at Trinity Laban, a licensed Student sponsor, are managed by the Admissions team. A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies may be requested once an applicant holds an unconditional offer and has satisfied every offer condition. Places are decided by audition, with applications made through UCAS Conservatoires. Auditions abroad have taken place in the USA and in China, including Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai, and those unable to attend in person can upload a recording. Most undergraduate programmes set IELTS 5.5 in all four components, while the Graduate Diploma and postgraduate study demand more. Both the BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance and the BMus can be entered via an integrated foundation year, and a partner, Goldsmiths, University of London, provides an optional pre-sessional course online.
In New Cross, the privately managed Ironworks House prioritises international first-years and first-year undergraduates from outside the M25, holding rooms back for students under 18, though places are not guaranteed. Pre-arrival guidance explains banking and UK border procedures, and the Students' Union organises induction events. Those completing eligible programmes are able to apply for the Graduate Route.
