University College Birmingham

Birmingham

University College Birmingham is a specialist, career-focused university based in the centre of Birmingham. It was founded in 1957 as a municipal college of bakery, catering and domestic science, became an independent institution in 1993, gained the power to award its own degrees in 2007 and received full university title in 2012. It delivers both higher education and further education, with more than 10,000 students in total, including around 7,000 on higher education programmes.

The university operates from a compact city-centre campus of buildings including Summer Row, McIntyre House, Moss House and the James Cond Building, supported by its own halls of residence. It is best known for hospitality, culinary arts, tourism and events management, and it also teaches business, sport, education, early years, health, and hair and beauty. Teaching is closely linked to industry, with practical facilities such as training restaurants and kitchens, and a strong emphasis on placements and employability. Alongside its degree provision, the institution runs a college and a sixth form offering A-Level study.

Information for International Students

University College Birmingham has an international community of more than 1,400 students from over 60 countries. A dedicated international team supports applicants from enquiry through to arrival, including guidance on the Student visa and the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), and the university describes an open door approach to student support. Eligible graduates may apply for the UK Graduate Route.

The typical English language requirement for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees is IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, although some programmes differ. Applicants who hold an offer but need to improve their English can take UCB Go, the university's pre-sessional English course, which combines language development with academic skills. For students who need additional preparation, the university offers an International Foundation Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism, with a lower English entry level, as well as foundation courses leading to undergraduate study.

First-time international students are guaranteed an offer of hall accommodation if they hold a UCB offer, are coming without dependants and complete their residency agreement, deposit and pre-payment within the offer deadline. The university expects international students to live in or near Birmingham during their studies.
