University of Bristol
The roots of the University of Bristol lie in University College Bristol, established in 1876 and the first such institution in the country to accept women on the same terms as men. A royal charter was granted in 1909, and the university now belongs to the research-intensive Russell Group. Its student population of about 32,000 is roughly three quarters undergraduate, and more than 200 undergraduate courses are available in the arts and humanities, social sciences, engineering and sciences. Chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, environmental science and geography are among its research strengths, and 13 Nobel laureates have had links with Bristol as members of staff or former students. In 1947 the university also created the country's first drama degree. The University Precinct at Tyndall's Park, in the heart of the city, is where the principal academic buildings are concentrated, while student residences are located in Stoke Bishop and Clifton, and veterinary science is based on a separate campus at Langford.
Information for International Students
International applicants and new students at the University of Bristol receive dedicated support and can contact the international team via live chat, WhatsApp or email. For those needing preparation before a degree, the university's own Centre for Academic Language and Development runs a one-year International Foundation Programme. The centre also provides pre-sessional English for undergraduate and postgraduate offer holders, and in-sessional academic language support once the degree is under way. English language requirements differ by programme and are set out as lettered profiles, with the relevant one shown on each course page.
University accommodation is guaranteed for new first-year undergraduates, and for new postgraduates charged international fees, if they apply before the published deadline, accept their offer as their firm choice, are studying full time at Bristol for the first time and come without partners or dependants. The Student Visa team gives advice on visa conditions, the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and post-study work in the UK, including the Graduate Route. International undergraduates and postgraduates are eligible for Think Big scholarships, and Bristol Ready, an online guide, helps new arrivals with registration, travel planning and settling in.
