University of Dundee
A gift from Mary Ann Baxter funded the foundation of University College Dundee in 1881, and for a long period the college belonged to the University of St Andrews. Independence came in 1967, when the University of Dundee received its royal charter. Today it covers a broad range of subjects and has approximately 13,000 students, the majority of them undergraduates.
More than 50 buildings make up the main campus in Dundee's West End, while the School of Medicine is located at Ninewells Hospital, on the city's western edge. The life sciences are a particular strength: in the Research Excellence Framework, Dundee's biological sciences research placed among the strongest in the UK. The university also has established expertise in medicine, dentistry, engineering and law. Through Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design it has a substantial profile in art and design, where students take a general first year, trying out several disciplines, before selecting a specialist honours pathway. As is usual in Scotland, undergraduate honours degrees generally take four years.
Information for International Students
The International Advice Service, whose staff include an arrivals coordinator, assists international students, together with their families, with immigration queries, visa extensions, ATAS clearance, Graduate Route applications and practical matters such as banking. Applicants below direct entry requirements can start through International College Dundee, an embedded college that Oxford International Education Group runs on the campus. Undergraduates can follow its International Stage One or International Stage Two route, and postgraduates its International Incorporated Master's; each blends academic English with subject study before students progress to a Dundee degree.
On the city campus, the university also delivers pre-sessional English courses of its own, among them an 11-week option for applicants whose score is at most one IELTS band short of what their course requires; passing it allows progression with no IELTS retake. English requirements differ between courses and appear on each course page. A guarantee of one single-room offer for the first year, in flats located on campus or nearby, applies to new full-time students who make Dundee their firm first choice and apply for housing before the deadline. Country pages list regional scholarships and entry requirements.
