University of East London

London

The University of East London (UEL) traces its origins to 1898, when the West Ham Technical Institute opened as a people's university for east London. It developed through a series of colleges and polytechnics before gaining university status in 1992. The university has two main campuses in east London: Stratford, close to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which hosts education, health, sport and psychology, and Docklands, the largest site, on the waterfront at Royal Albert Dock. University Square Stratford is a shared facility with Birkbeck, University of London.

UEL has around 27,000 students on its own campuses, with a wider community of more than 40,000 when collaborative partners are included. Its schools cover architecture, computing and engineering, business and law, education, health sciences, psychology, sport and the creative industries. The university is London's only provider of podiatric education, through its Centre for Clinical Education, and the SportsDock facility at Docklands served as a training base for Team USA during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Information for International Students

UEL has a diverse community, with around 160 nationalities represented across its student body. A dedicated international team supports applicants, while the Student Immigration and Compliance team advises on Student visa matters, including the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) process and Right to Study checks at enrolment. The typical English language requirement is IELTS 5.5 or 6.0 for undergraduate courses and IELTS 6.0 or 6.5 for most master's programmes, depending on the course.

Applicants slightly below the required level can take a pre-sessional English course, delivered online by the university. International pathway programmes are offered through the International Study Centre, operated by Malvern International in partnership with UEL and fully embedded on campus. Options include an integrated International Foundation Programme with a Student visa covering the full degree, International Year One with entry to the second year, and Pre-Master's programmes in business and humanities or in English and research skills. Accommodation includes waterfront halls of residence on campus, and the university provides an International Travel and Preparation Handbook alongside pre-arrival events. Eligible graduates may apply for the UK Graduate Route.
