University of Essex
Granted its royal charter in 1965, the University of Essex belongs to the first generation of plate glass universities that emerged as British higher education expanded during the 1960s. Wivenhoe Park in Colchester is its main campus. Its East 15 Acting School is based at the Loughton campus beside Epping Forest, within easy walking distance of Debden Underground station, where studios, rehearsal rooms and production workshops are spread over three sites. When the 2025/26 academic year ended, the former Southend campus closed and its teaching was consolidated at Colchester.
The university has a particular reputation in the social sciences, notably government and political science, economics and research on human rights, and it is home to the UK Data Archive. Essex has won the Queen's Anniversary Prize on two occasions, once for its human rights work and once for social and economic research, and in 2018 the Times Higher Education Awards named it University of the Year. Some 17,000 students are enrolled, over a third of whom are from outside the UK. Among its alumni are the Nobel laureates Christopher Pissarides and Óscar Arias.
Information for International Students
Essex draws students from over 140 countries. A dedicated enquiries service handles applicants' visa questions, while the International Services Team looks after enrolled students; advice covers the Student visa, post-study options such as the Graduate Route, and how to request a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. On the Colchester campus, the University of Essex International College, operated with Kaplan International Pathways, offers three routes: a Foundation Certificate with guaranteed progression once successfully completed, an International Year One giving entry to a degree at second-year level, and a Pre-Master's programme. College students may use every university facility. The college's pre-sessional English courses, lasting five, ten or fifteen weeks, let offer holders satisfy their English condition without another external test, and unconditional offer holders can take a four-week academic skills course. English requirements differ from course to course.
According to the university, accommodation at Colchester is guaranteed for a course's full length, subject to its application terms. Airport transfers can be booked through the university, and the Students' Union's international students' community, Welcome Week and a pre-arrival wellbeing course ease the transition. Talented international applicants may be awarded scholarships.
