University of Glasgow
The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451 and is one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world. It is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities and is consistently placed among the world's leading institutions. The main campus at Gilmorehill sits in the city's West End, while the Garscube estate on the edge of Glasgow houses veterinary and sports facilities. A further campus in Dumfries, in south-west Scotland, is home to the School of Social and Environmental Sustainability.
The university teaches more than 35,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students from over 140 countries, with teaching spanning the arts and humanities, medical, veterinary and life sciences, science and engineering, and the social sciences. It has long-established reputations in medicine, veterinary medicine, law, engineering, physics and economics, and its alumni include the economist Adam Smith and the physicist Lord Kelvin. Research is a central part of the institution's identity, supported by substantial annual research income and strategic partnerships with universities such as Columbia, McGill and Hong Kong, alongside collaborations in Singapore, China and Japan.
Information for International Students
Glasgow has a large and well-established international community, with students from more than 140 countries. International Student Support provides guidance on visas and immigration, including the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) required for a Student visa, and information on the Graduate Route for those who wish to work in the UK after completing their degree.
English language requirements are set programme by programme, and many courses typically ask for IELTS 6.5 overall. Applicants who need to improve their English can take a BALEAP-accredited pre-sessional course with the university's English for Academic Study unit before their degree begins. Glasgow International College, run in partnership with Kaplan since 2007, offers foundation certificates in business and social sciences or science and engineering, together with pre-master's programmes in subjects such as law, business and the sciences, with progression to degree study at the university for successful students.
Accommodation is guaranteed for new international undergraduate and postgraduate students who apply by the published summer deadline. Before arrival, students can use an online guide to settling in Glasgow and a free Study UK preparation course.
