University of Greenwich
The University of Greenwich traces its history to Woolwich Polytechnic, which opened in 1890 as one of the earliest polytechnics in the UK, and it was granted university status in 1992. Its flagship Greenwich campus occupies part of the Old Royal Naval College beside the Thames, while the Avery Hill campus in Eltham offers a quieter parkland setting in south-east London. A third campus at Chatham Maritime in Kent is part of the Universities at Medway partnership. The university is now part of the London and South East University Group, formed with the University of Kent.
With around 29,000 students, Greenwich is a large and diverse institution organised into four faculties: Business; Engineering and Science; Education, Health and Human Sciences; and Law, Arts and Social Sciences. It holds a Gold award in the Teaching Excellence Framework and is a member of University Alliance. Its Natural Resources Institute is internationally recognised for work on agriculture, pest management and food security and has received several Queen's Anniversary Prizes. Alumni include the Nobel laureates Charles K. Kao and Abiy Ahmed.
Information for International Students
Greenwich welcomes students from more than 150 countries across its London and Kent campuses. The international team supports applicants through each step, from choosing a course and accepting an offer to receiving the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), applying for a Student visa and registering on arrival. Dedicated international advisers help new students adjust to life in the UK, with practical help on matters such as opening a bank account and registering with a doctor, and visa guidance continues through to working after graduation.
English language requirements vary by programme and are set out on individual course pages. The University of Greenwich International College, operated by Oxford International Education Group from Bounty House, around 15 minutes' walk from the Greenwich campus, offers an International Year Zero, an International Year One in business, computing, engineering, science and social sciences, and an International Incorporated Master's in business and computing. The college also runs six-week and twelve-week pre-sessional English courses.
Undergraduates who firmly accept an offer are guaranteed a place in university halls, which are among the most affordable in London. Selected programmes also offer January and April starts.
