University of Huddersfield

Huddersfield

The University of Huddersfield traces its origins to the Huddersfield Science and Mechanics' Institute of 1825. The institution later became a technical college and then Huddersfield Polytechnic, before gaining university status in 1992. Its main Queensgate campus lies in the centre of Huddersfield, in West Yorkshire, and combines restored textile mill buildings with modern purpose-built facilities.

The university has around 16,000 students and is known for its focus on teaching quality. It holds a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework, won the first Global Teaching Excellence Award in 2017 and has an unusually high proportion of academic staff holding both doctorates and teaching qualifications. Research strengths include engineering and precision technologies, with the Centre for Precision Technologies receiving a Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2022. The broad range of subjects covers art, design and architecture, business, computing and engineering, education, health, human and applied sciences, music and the humanities, and many courses offer professional placements and strong links with industry.

Information for International Students

Huddersfield has more than 4,000 international students from over 100 countries. A dedicated Immigration and Compliance team advises on the Student visa and the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), visa extensions and post-study options such as the Graduate Route, with regular online drop-in sessions for applicants and students. Regional officers support applicants through the application process, and more than 60 global societies help students build connections once they arrive.

The typical English language requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5, although some programmes set higher levels. Students who do not yet meet the requirement may be eligible for one of the university's pre-sessional English programmes on campus.

The University of Huddersfield International Study Centre, run in partnership with Study Group on the university campus, offers an International Foundation Year, an International Year One leading to the second year of a degree, and a Pre-Master's Programme. International Year One and Pre-Master's students can apply for a combined visa that covers progression to their degree. International students also have access to academic skills tutors, round-the-clock wellbeing support and careers guidance.
