University of Nottingham
The University of Nottingham began life in 1881 as University College Nottingham and became a university by royal charter in 1948. A public research university within the Russell Group, it has over 35,000 students across its campuses in and near Nottingham, and it runs further campuses at Ningbo in China and Semenyih in Malaysia.
University Park, the principal site, is a 330-acre campus set in parkland, with the Trent Building, opened by King George V in 1928, at its centre. Education and computer science are among the subjects based on Jubilee Campus, which opened in 1999, while biosciences and veterinary medicine are located at the Sutton Bonington campus, south of the city. Medical teaching is based at a major teaching hospital, the Queen's Medical Centre. Three Nobel Prizes have been awarded to its staff and alumni, among them the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2003, which Sir Peter Mansfield won for research on magnetic resonance imaging. A member of the university community has also received a Fields Medal.
Information for International Students
International applicants to the University of Nottingham can draw on dedicated visa guidance covering Student visa applications, ATAS clearance, visa extensions and changing visa category, and advisers will answer individual queries. English language requirements are set course by course and appear in the course listings. TOEFL iBT, IELTS, PTE Academic and a variety of national qualifications are all accepted.
CELE, the Centre for English Language Education, runs pre-sessional courses in English for Academic Purposes, available online or in person in Nottingham, preparing students to study at foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate or research level. A UKVI-approved IELTS is required for an in-person pre-sessional course taken on a Student visa, except for holders of a joint CAS, and the online pre-sessional courses are the only option for applicants under 18. New arrivals are helped to settle by International Welcome events and a welcome toolkit, along with advice about getting to Nottingham and entering the UK. Halls may be catered or self-catered and are managed either by private partners or by the university. Scholarships for international students cover undergraduate, master's and research study, and the Graduate Route may be open to eligible graduates.
