University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield is a public research university in South Yorkshire, England. Its origins lie in Firth College, opened in 1879, and the Sheffield Technical School, which merged to form University College Sheffield in 1897. It received its Royal Charter as the University of Sheffield in 1905.
The university is based in Sheffield, with its main buildings concentrated around Western Bank and the city centre, close to parks and within easy reach of the Peak District. It has around 28,000 students, of whom roughly 20,000 are undergraduates and 8,000 postgraduates.
Sheffield is a member of the Russell Group and the N8 Research Partnership, and is regarded as one of the leading research universities in the UK. It is particularly known for engineering, and its Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre works with more than a hundred industrial partners. The university has received five Queen's Anniversary Prizes, six Nobel laureates have been associated with it, and teaching across the university is research-led.
Information for International Students
The University of Sheffield has a large international community, with students from more than 150 countries and around a quarter of the student body coming from outside the UK. The International Recruitment Team supports applicants, and the university provides detailed guidance on Student visas, immigration and the Graduate Route. New international students can join the International Student Success programme.
The standard English language requirement for both undergraduate and postgraduate study is IELTS 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in each component, although some departments set higher levels.
