University of Sunderland
The University of Sunderland traces its origins to 1901, when Sunderland Technical College opened with departments in chemistry, engineering, physics, commerce and languages. The college later became Sunderland Polytechnic and was granted university status in 1992. In the North East of England, the university has two campuses in Sunderland: City Campus in the city centre and the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's on the banks of the River Wear. It also operates a campus in London near Canary Wharf and a centre in Hong Kong.
The university reports almost 30,000 students across its locations, including those studying through partner institutions overseas. It holds a Silver award in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Long-standing strengths include pharmacy, taught since 1921, and engineering, where placement-based study was introduced in the 1930s. Current priorities include health sciences, advanced manufacturing and engineering, computing and digital innovation, and a growing portfolio of apprenticeships. Teaching is designed around links with employers and the professions, supported by recent investment in laboratories and industry-standard facilities.
Information for International Students
International students make up a significant share of the student body, with learners from more than 100 countries, and the university has been recognised for the diversity of its international community. A dedicated International Student Support team, based at The Gateway on City Campus, provides guidance on Student visa applications, the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) process and the Graduate Route after completion, alongside advice on settling in, finance and wellbeing. An international arrival guide and a welcome programme with induction activities help new students adjust.
English language requirements vary by course, and IELTS Academic is one of several accepted qualifications. The university offers English for Academic Purposes pre-sessional courses at several levels, available on campus and online. Preparation routes are delivered on the Sir Tom Cowie Campus by the partner ONCAMPUS Sunderland, comprising an Undergraduate Foundation Programme, an International Year One leading to the second year of selected business degrees, and a Pre-Master's Programme. Successful students who meet the progression criteria are guaranteed a place on a relevant degree. University accommodation is available but in high demand, so early application is advised.
