York St John University

LondonYork

York St John University's story begins in 1841, the year a Church of England diocesan college for training teachers opened in York. A merger with a sister college in Ripon followed in 1974, and university status was granted in 2006. Part of the Cathedrals Group of universities founded by churches, York St John calls itself a university for social impact. It stresses inclusion, social justice and community engagement, and it runs services such as a counselling centre and a law clinic.

The Lord Mayor's Walk campus, the main site, lies in the heart of the historic city and mixes Victorian architecture with contemporary facilities such as the Creative Centre for arts and media, opened in 2021. About a mile from the campus is a sports park on Haxby Road. Over 10,000 students are enrolled, a notable proportion of them from abroad, and professional and short courses are delivered at a smaller campus in London. The allied health professions, education, the creative and performing arts, and psychology are among its strengths in teaching and research, and placement partnerships in health, education and associated sectors support many of its courses.

Information for International Students

International students make up a sizeable share of the York St John community, and dedicated web pages guide applicants and offer holders stage by stage. Those needing more preparation can start with a foundation year in law and social sciences, liberal arts, psychology, sport, business, education, or language and counselling. Through the presessional course, international students are introduced to UK academic study as they strengthen their English and the study skills that degree-level work requires.

Offer holders are advised on getting ready for the CAS, satisfying Student visa conditions and gaining access to an eVisa. Pre-arrival guides cover the journey to York, the first days after arriving and adjusting to the culture and ways of life in the UK. Residences managed by the university are spread across York, and international offer holders request a room via the online accommodation portal. Scholarship and funding details for international students appear alongside guidance on fee payment, and American students have access to federal student loans. Links with partner universities in countries including Japan and South Korea create study abroad opportunities, and eligible graduates can apply for the UK Graduate Route.
